Bangkok is the capital of Thailand and is known as Krung Thep Maha Nakhon for Thais or shortly as Krung Thep which is translated as City of Angels. Intercontinental Hotel Bangkok is a beautiful hotel with great service – check out their video travel guide of Bangkok.
Many travellers would go to Bangkok in December so you may want to plan your trip during the months other than December to avoid high airfare rates. Rates on other months are usually cheap as Bangkok is one of the places that most travellers and backpackers love to visit. Try also booking your flights during weekdays, especially on Tuesdays to Thursdays as most vacationers would have theirs booked on weekends.
You may also consider flying in through Cambodia then getting to Bangkok via bus or train, though travel time is longer, you would be able to save on cash. You could also opt to not fly direct and instead go through large cities such as Singapore and get a flight from there, as carriers there are in a stiff competition hence, lower fair rates.
In getting around the city, you can use the mass transit system as it is more cheap compared to riding individual cabs. If you want to experience the unique Bangkok culture through their vehicles, then try riding their motorcycle taxi. The cheapest vehicle in Bangkok is the “tuk-tuks” or otherwise known as the auto rickshaws which is a three wheeled, open air vehicle.
There are also many cheap hotels in Bangkok that offer a good place to stay in that would cost you less than $50 per night. Hotels such as Lub d Bangkok, Take a Nap Hotel, Baiyoke Boutique Hotel, Rambuttri Village Inn, Ibis Bangkok Riverside, Justbeds and White Orchid are well under this budget.
Then for the food, you could go to the Silom Road and enjoy a variety of Bangkok foods from the restaurants and food stalls lining the road.
For the places to visit, you should never leave Bangkok without going to the Grand Palace & Wat Prakeaw where the shrine of the Emerald Buddha is found, Chinatown or the Yaowarat, the famous Floating Market, the Wat Arun or the Temple of the Dawn which is one of the famous sight in the Southeast Asia, the Wat Pho where the giant reclining Buddha is found, the Chao Phraya River & Waterways, Jim Thompson’s House for Thai art, see the Ladyboy show, visit the Vimanmek Mansion and cap off your Bangkok trip with a tour to the Siam Ocean World.
